Psalms 74:1-2 (KJV)
Maschil of Asaph.
O God, why hast thou cast us off for ever? why doth thine anger smoke against the sheep of thy pasture?Remember thy congregation, which thou hast purchased of old; the rod of thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed; this mount Zion, wherein thou hast dwelt.

Of this Asaph the ISBE[1] says, “the name of three men in the Old Testament, of whom one is the reputed author of Psalms 50 and 73 through 83. He was one of David’s three chief musicians, the other two being Heman, and Ethan or Jeduthun, and we first hear of him when the ark was taken to Jerusalem.”
I have no question that this Psalm was written in the days of King David and perhaps even was written by David and given to Asaph. The terminology used of the Shepherd and of Zion lean strongly towards it.
John Gill writes, “Some think that Asaph, the penman of this psalm, was not the same that lived in the times of David, but some other of the same name, a descendant of his, that lived after the Babylonish captivity, since the psalm treats of things that were done at the time the Jews were carried captive into Babylon, or after; but this hinders not that it might be the same man; for why might he not, under a spirit of prophecy, speak of the sufferings of the church in later ages, as well as David and others testify before hand of the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow?”
Much of what David and others wrote was prophetic of times they would never live to see. Just so, why should we not believe that, under the spirit of prophecy, the message of the Bible would have relevance to our lives just now?
David, Asaph and others of their day had no way to know of the Babylonian captivity. Yet so much of what they wrote was relevant for that day. Even so, all of what they wrote has meaning, purpose and relevance right now.
