Jeremiah 43:4 (KJV)
So Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces, and all the people, obeyed not the voice of the LORD, to dwell in the land of Judah.
So Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces, and all the people, obeyed not the voice of the LORD, to dwell in the land of Judah.
At first Jeremiah preached surrender to Babylon, “Allow them to remove you from Babylon.” The chief men and majority of the population refused his message and were destroyed, and still taken captive by Babylon. But there were others that Babylon left in Judah. To those Jeremiah preached they should remain in Judah and not flee to Egypt out of fear of Babylon. They too refused his message. They fled to Egypt and forced Jeremiah to go with them. There they were destroyed as well.
The problem in both cases, was that they did not trust God. Because they did not trust God, they would not obey Jeremiah’s message. Their problem wasn’t with Jeremiah. Their problem was with God. But because they did not trust God, they did not obey the preaching of God’s Word and they were almost altogether destroyed.
Our problem today is that we do not trust God. It manifests itself in a rejection of Bible preaching. People heap themselves around teachers who bring popular messages and modern music, or else they ignore Christianity altogether. But the problem is not with solid preaching. It exists if they will but hear it. The problem is a lack of trust in God.
It is this problem that will destroy us.
