Genesis 30:31 (KJV)
And he said, What shall I give thee? And Jacob said, Thou shalt not give me any thing: if thou wilt do this thing for me, I will again feed and keep thy flock:
And he said, What shall I give thee? And Jacob said, Thou shalt not give me any thing: if thou wilt do this thing for me, I will again feed and keep thy flock:
Laban had already proven himself to be a difficult man. He had tricked Jacob in the matter of Rachel and Leah. Jacob has expected to return home shortly after leaving. He had agreed to stay for seven years in exchange for Rachel and was forced to stay seven more besides.
Now, when he wished to return home, Laban offers to pay him to stay. Jacob would have none of it. He was willing to work for his own family’s wellbeing. He was willing to trust God to provide, but he was not willing to let Laban believe he gave him anything. Perhaps more importantly, he did not want to depend upon Laban but upon God.
No man or woman will be their best if they believe that anyone other than God and their own hard work meets their needs and provides success and prosperity. Don’t allow yourself to rest on the gifts of others. Trust God and make your way by Him.
