Exodus 7:11-12 (KJV)
Then Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers: now the magicians of Egypt, they also did in like manner with their enchantments.
For they cast down every man his rod, and they became serpents: but Aaron’s rod swallowed up their rods.

I read today of three miracles the magicians attempted to duplicate. 

• • The first one, the staff to a serpent, they did but Aaron’s serpent ate theirs. 
• • The second, the rivers to blood, the Bible just says they did. 
• • The third one, dust turned to lice, they could not duplicate. 

The case of the third is clear.

The case of the second is speculation- who knows.
 The Bible just says they did so with their enchantments. If there was already blood throughout the land, who can tell whether they made any more. 

The first is the issue. 
The Bible clearly says they turned their rods into serpents. 

Magicians, as we know them, are illusionists. They can’t do magic. They can only make us think they have done magic. The use of the word enchantments might imply this was an illusion. 

But there is another, less comfortable explanation. There is a supernatural power that exists outside of God. To discount the possibility that they did in fact turn rods into serpents denies the power of Satan. We live in a world that, even when accepting God, chooses to discount the Devil. If he exists. If he is actually powerful. If he can really do things, then this is an enemy more dreadful than we are willing to abide. 

Here is where Aaron’s rod swallowing them becomes key. No matter how they produced their magic, God is more powerful, capable of swallowing up any work Satan does. 

• • If it is merely a mind game
• • If it is just a human skill or
• • If it is indeed a demonic force

God is greater.
