Numbers 14:5-8 (KJV) A Scriptural Pattern Against Resistance

Numbers 14:5-8 (KJV)
Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.
And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of them that searched the land, rent their clothes:
And they spake unto all the company of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it, is an exceeding good land.
If the LORD delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey.

It was a terrible controversy
Moses knew the will of God. There was no question. The people had left Egypt believing this to be the will of God. But now, looking the will of God in the face, realizing that God would not allow them to walk into His will on a bed of roses, they resisted. Notice what happens next.

Moses and Aaron fell on their faces
  • They did not defend
  • They did not attempt to convince
  • They did not insist
They fell on their faces before the congregation. They left the matter in the hands of the Lord. They were God’s people. They were His charge and not theirs. They would leave the consequences up to the Lord.

Joshua and Caleb spoke up
While Moses and Aaron sought the Lord, Joshua and Caleb urged on the congregation to do right.

This is a scriptural pattern I have been privileged to witness in my own ministry. Though, in the case of Kadesh Barnea, it was unsuccessful to turn the congregation in time, I have seen it work in my ministry and in others, when, in a difficult situation, the preacher seeks the Lord and men in the church encourage the members to do right.

To my readers:
