Deuteronomy 20:4 (KJV)
For the LORD your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.
For the LORD your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.
Though my text for today is verse four, the previous three are necessary for context,
Deuteronomy 20:1-3 (KJV)
When thou goest out to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and chariots, and a people more than thou, be not afraid of them: for the LORD thy God is with thee, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
And it shall be, when ye are come nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people,
And shall say unto them, Hear, O Israel, ye approach this day unto battle against your enemies: let not your hearts faint, fear not, and do not tremble, neither be ye terrified because of them;
When thou goest out to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and chariots, and a people more than thou, be not afraid of them: for the LORD thy God is with thee, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
And it shall be, when ye are come nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people,
And shall say unto them, Hear, O Israel, ye approach this day unto battle against your enemies: let not your hearts faint, fear not, and do not tremble, neither be ye terrified because of them;
This battle was going to be a tough one. The enemy had,
- More men and
- More weaponry
- God instructed that the priests speak to the men words of comfort and faith.
- God also instructed the officers to send certain men home previous to the battle lest they die in combat
That tells me that, even though the Lord promised to go with them and fight for them, there would be deaths on the side of Israel. Their hope, just as is our hope, is eternal and otherworldly. We do not look for a city made by hands. Our hope, and their hope, lay on the other side of the veil of life.
Israel awaits a different promise than the Christian, but it is nonetheless a promise in a new heaven and new earth.
