Thou shalt not see thy brother’s ass or his ox fall down by the way, and hide thyself from them: thou shalt surely help him to lift them up again.

Deuteronomy chapter 22:1-4 go together as a theme addressing the subject of helping a brother.
Notice:
There were a variety of animals
Ox, sheep, and ass. The fact is, it would not matter what sort of animal, they would have been obliged to be a help to their brother.

There were a variety of scenarios where help might be needed
The brother’s animal may have escaped, or it might have fallen by the way. You name the sort of situation a brother might be in need of help and they would have been obliged to help.

There were different sorts of brethren
One was a neighbor well known and the other was someone far away and unknown. Either way, they were obliged to help.

I am interested in the phrase, “Thou shalt not .., hide thyself from them.” They need a helper, not a hider. Hiding from the need in no way absolved them from the obligation to help.
God does not change. His plan for mankind goes through several dispensations, but His plan does not change and neither does His character and justice. We do not hold the Old Testament law as a means of reconciliation with God today, but we can sure learn something from it as a pattern for the right treatment of others. If you see a person in need of help, whether you know them or not, and you have the means to help, do not ignore them. Help them.
