Joshua 5:1 (KJV)
And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites, which were on the side of Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, which were by the sea, heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.

One must wonder how it is that the Amorites and the Canaanites, whose heart melted, and spirit withered at the news of God’s supernatural intervention on behalf of Israel at the Jordan River, would still pitch the fight they did against Israel. I surmise that it must have been because, refusing to surrender to the God of Israel, they had no recourse but to fight.
I am reminded of the Philistines when Eli’s sons brought the ark of God to the battlefield.[1]
I also think of the Pharisees when confronted with the work of Jesus.[2]
This offers a clue into the life of any child of God. We suffer sometimes precisely because we have the hand of God upon us. The hand of God offers victory, but in this world, it also incites the enemy. A committed soldier does not shrink because the battle looks hopeless. Contrarily, he doubles down to the fight. Satan’s own are nothing if they are not committed.
Hold on child of God. The enemy is terrible, but our God is awesome.
