Joshua 8:9 (KJV) Lodging Among The People

Joshua 8:9 (KJV)
Joshua therefore sent them forth: and they went to lie in ambush, and abode between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of Ai: but Joshua lodged that night among the people.

The wording suggests that Joshua did not always lodge among the people. Responsibilities, personal care, and even spiritual development required that this was not a normal thing or even a regular thing. It was, however, a significant thing when it happened.

Israel had just taken a good licking. That had been defeated at Ai and it was, as much as anyone, Joshua’s fault. By this time, he had heard from the Lord and corrected the issue. Ai must be confronted again. It was appropriate, inspirational and encouraging for Joshua to lodge with his men on this night.

The man of God must preach, and I would suggest live, not as pleasing men but God. That being the case, when he does make his dwelling among the people, they may note it and take heart.
