Joshua 24:14 (KJV) Before Serve

Joshua 24:14 (KJV)
Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD.
Before there was “Choose you this day,” before there was “As for me and my house” there was “Now therefore fear the LORD.”
Israel thought they could self-determine to serve the LORD rather than strange gods. Without the fear of the Lord, without the indwelling of the Holy Ghost, their service to the Lord quickly became in itself service to the gods of the world and the flesh.
The lesson is quite simple before there can be service, there must be fear. The grave mistake Israel made, and the one most professing Christians make, is the belief that they can serve the Lord in the strength of the will. Just as a good tree cannot bear evil fruit and a corrupt tree cannot bear good, so the nature of man is incapable of producing service honoring to God. We must have Christ. He alone produces good fruit.
We must have Christ.
