And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul: there is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape into the land of the Philistines; and Saul shall despair of me, to seek me any more in any coast of Israel: so shall I escape out of his hand.
It seems to me that every one of the commentaries makes a leap of assumption into wrong territory here. The assumption is that David was wrong to go to Achish. Scofield titles this passage, “David’s lapse of faith.” Jameson, Fausset and Brown says, “This resolution of David’s was, in every respect, wrong.”
I would simply like to point out that:
Nowhere does the Bible say it was wrong.
This is a supposition based entirely upon what we assume would have been best.
Every one of David’s men and their families followed him
If it were a lapse of faith wouldn’t it seem likely that at least some of them would have rejected the move?
David used the occasion to strike at the enemy
From this location, he was able to inflict damage otherwise unlikely.
This caused Saul to once again focus on the true enemy of Israel
David, no longer being a perceived threat, Saul once again turned to the real danger, the Philistines.
Ultimately this led to Saul’s death and David’s coronation
Really, would it have been the result of a lapse of faith that brought David onto the throne?
I rather believe that David was on a dangerous and potentially “secret mission” from the Lord. The mission resulted in David’s coronation, his infiltration into enemy territory and his eventual victories over them.
