1 Kings 13:18 (KJV)
He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the LORD, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him.
He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the LORD, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him.
The fleshly impulse is to hurt for this man if God. It appears God killed him, and in a horrific way, through no fault of his own. He was deceived. Our impulse would be fleshly, and it would be wrong. This man of God had heard from the Lord. He knew very well what God had said. He chose to listen to a man, however sincere he may have appeared, rather than to stick with the Word of the Lord.
The old prophet appears to be a good man, most of the time. Even the best of men are at best men. In this case, he lied. There are plenty of liars in the world of religion. No matter. This man of God had the very Word of the Lord. He was without excuse because he was responsible to the word he had already received.
Now, we have the Word of God. We hold it in our hands, or at least are free to do so. There are many good men in the ministry who have, at one time or another blown it. Sometimes it has been unintentional. They are but men. Sometimes, they may have gotten in the flesh and done something malicious. They are but men. This is no excuse for turning from the Lord and disobeying Him. There are also many spiritual predators in the ministry. If Satan can make himself appear an angel of light it is no marvel that his ministers can appear to be servants of Christ. They can be so good at what they do, souls are drawn into their lies. But we have the Word of God. We are personally responsible to obey the Lord regardless of the deceivers because we already have the Word of God.
Does the man of God’s judgment seem severe? No more so than those who will be tormented in the lake of fire day and night forever. They too had the Word of God. The Christian cannot lose his or her salvation, but he could be guilty of condemning another soul to hell because of his or her own disobedience. We have the Word of God.
