And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem.

Saul’s letters were specifically to the synagogues in the city of Damascus. He was on his way to Damascus to go to the synagogues there. Upon his arrival at these synagogues, he planned to ask them to point out who in the synagogues were “of this way.”

Because local churches were not yet established there and because the earliest Christians were Jews, it would be reasonable to expect that the rulers in the synagogues would know which of them were “of this way.” It would be obvious: 

• From their conversations
• From their mannerisms
• From their absence in some cases

Christians ought not to hide who they are. It should be that someone looking for the Christians can find others who know who they are and where to find them.
