1 Chronicles 11:2 (KJV)
And moreover in time past, even when Saul was king, thou wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the LORD thy God said unto thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be ruler over my people Israel.

Joseph Benson commented, “it is apparent that they knew it was God’s will David should be king, and therefore many of them had opposed David hitherto against their own consciences.”

How often we are guilty of following the popular thing against our own consciences!

• The easy thing
• The fleshly thing
• The thing with the least consequences 
• The thing with the least conflict

is not always the right thing.

How many of Saul’s soldiers had hounded David knowing all the while that it was God’s will that David should be king? How many of them may have aided in Saul slaying the man God anointed to be king simply because it was too risky to stand with David?

Some did stand with David. Six hundred of those who were distressed, discontent, and in debt followed him. Others could have had they wanted to. Instead they 

• Quenched the prompting of the Holy Spirit 
• Ignored the leading of God and 
• Followed the majority 

It worked out for these. But some of them died alongside Saul in battle. 

They would have been better off if they had abandoned what was easy and done what was right.
