Esther 4:4 (KJV) A Wakeup Call

Esther 4:4 (KJV)
So Esther’s maids and her chamberlains came and told it her. Then was the queen exceedingly grieved; and she sent raiment to clothe Mordecai, and to take away his sackcloth from him: but he received it not.

Esther was where God placed her, but her circumstances had left her out of touch. Modern culture can build a list of abuses made against her, but at this moment, she lived much more comfortably than her blood family did. When word reached her ears that Mordecai mourned in sackcloth and ashes the Bible says she did two immediate things:

• She grieved exceedingly and
• She sent better raiment to cover Mordecai

I can’t help but believe she knew the teachings of the Jews and that Mordecai wasn’t in sackcloth and ashes because he had nothing else to wear. She must have known this, so the raiment was meant to tell Mordecai to “perk up”. It was a shallow answer to a situation more terrible than she could, at that moment comprehend. 

I wonder if American Christians live in such a bubble? I am not saying we aren’t where God wants us, but I wonder if our situation has left us blind of the spiritual danger the people of God are in? I wonder if, whenever we get some hint of the trouble, we don’t cover it up with a “chin up” sort of response, being grieved that a Christian would imply there is some trouble in the world? 

Esther needed a wakeup call. She was right to be grieved exceedingly, but her grief wasn’t focused in the right direction yet and neither was her personal response adequate for the circumstances. She needed to take a personal risk and she needed to call others to fast and pray with her. 

Christians in America are still poised to make a world impact. But it will not be accomplished as we now are. We can’t just cover this up and bid “Mordecai” to stop crying. We must humble ourselves and pray. We must see ourselves as deeply in trouble. We must pour our very lives into seeking the favor and blessing of God. 

Only then will God use us to turn the tide of spiritual destruction that is leveled against us.
