1 Corinthians 15:39-40 (KJV)
All flesh is not the same flesh: but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of beasts, another of fishes, and another of birds.
There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another.
All flesh is not the same flesh: but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of beasts, another of fishes, and another of birds.
There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another.
This is, in a manner, a parable. Apostle Paul used what was well known and obvious to teach a truth that is heavenly and not yet experienced. Every human being knows that the flesh of beasts, fish, and birds is different. Even among the beasts, the flesh of beef is different than the flesh of pork. It’s quite amazing when we think of it. Muscle, it seems like, would be muscle. Yet the muscles of a beast: cattle, goats, hogs, is distinctly different than that of birds: chickens, geese, quail. The two then are distinctly different than fish: salmon, bass, lobster. We know this to be true. We have consumed these various flesh.
Now the Word of God makes this leap; just so there is a difference between the earthly body of man and the heavenly body. We do not know what that difference is because we have not experienced it, but we do know:
- That it is a fact and
- That the glory of one is different than the glory of the other
The word glory has to do with condition or state. Perhaps the best way for us to understand the concept is appearance. The appearance or the earthly body is different than the appearance of the other.
We can certainly become attached to what we believe are the strengths and benefits of this earthly body. As a Christian, I have every reason to take advantage of the glory belonging to this body for the glory of God. But I confess, I long for the day when I set this glory aside for that glory which God has prepared me in heaven.
