Ephesians 5:6 (KJV) Why God’s Wrath?

Ephesians 5:6 (KJV)
Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.

I see this as a New Testament companion to Psalms One. The thing that stirs up the wrath of God against the children of disobedience is that they are deceived with vain words. They have listened to the sinners, the scornful, and the ungodly. They have been deceived with the vain and lying words. 

They wouldn’t be children of disobedience if they were not so deceived. If they listened to the Word of God, to those called and faithful to preach it; if they trusted the words of the man of God more than they did the vain and deceitful words of the ungodly, sinners and scornful, they would be children of God. They would trust Christ for salvation, and they would be born again. 

But this passage is not directly written to the unsaved that they would get saved. It is written to those who are the children of God. The admonition is simple. As children of God, we must carefully avoid these same vain words and the men who speak them. 

As every ear today hangs on the words of medical professionals, government leaders and statisticians, let us, who are the children of God, hang onto another source of authority, God and His Word, and those who preach it with integrity.
