Isaiah 1:8 (KJV) Solitude, Loneliness, and Abandonment

 

Isaiah 1:8 (KJV)

And the daughter of Zion is left as a cottage in a vineyard, as a lodge in a garden of cucumbers, as a besieged city.

Here is a picturesque scene. Jerusalem, the city, left:

• As a cottage in a vineyard
• As a lodge in a garden of cucumbers 
• As a besieged city

The prophecy has to do with the terrible work, first of Assyria on Israel and then Babylon on Judah and finally Jerusalem. The cottage and lodge refer to a temporary shelter meant to guard the garden. It was an isolated stand and a lonely duty and would finally be abandoned. Jerusalem would watch as everything around them was stolen as the fruit of a vineyard and a garden. They would stand alone until finally they too were taken, and the city abandoned. 

Barnes writes, “The essential idea, is that of the solitude, loneliness, and temporary continuance of even Jerusalem, while all around was involved in desolation and ruin.”

All of this came to pass but none of it was necessary, had the people only followed the Lord.
