Isaiah 21:11-12 (KJV)
The burden of Dumah. He calleth to me out of Seir, Watchman, what of the night? Watchman, what of the night?
The watchman said, The morning cometh, and also the night: if ye will enquire, enquire ye: return, come.
Dumah is a portion of Idumea of the Edomites. These people will have much to do with Israel in the days of Christ, as Herod was half Idumean.
The picture is that of those terrified of the night. There were darks times, rumors of trouble. There were threats because of their leaders, and there was a foreboding sense of disfavor with God. In the darkness they called out to the watchman, the one called and commissioned to protect them. I think he answers to the preacher and really to every Christian. We are the salt and the light. Ezekiel tells us we are set to be watchmen.
In this case, the watchman was faithful. He assured them that the morning would come. Whatever the threats were, they would not last forever. But he also warned them that another night would come. The answer to the fear was not the watchman. If they had a concern, if they were burdened and under conviction, they must “return and come.” I believe that speaks of coming to and resting in Christ.
He alone can promise an endless day.
