For though thou wash thee with nitre, and take thee much soap, yet thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord GOD.
Once in a while, a detective type program will portray a criminal who, try as he might, can’t clean the crime scene well enough to keep from getting caught. The program will always have them leave:
The butt of a cigarette- A small piece of jewelry
- A glass with fingerprints or
- A drop of blood
Sometimes they will portray a criminal who, though they shower thoroughly, feels like they cannot wash off the blood.
I have met people who, because they feel guilty, want to do some good deed as recompense. Maybe mow the Preacher’s lawn or wash the church building. I believe programs like Reformers Unanimous play on this guilt and get their people to do good deeds for the church. Good deeds are fine so long as the doer doesn’t think he is earning some favor by them.
God clearly tells us that there is no soap on earth that can wash away the guilt of sin. We could never attend church enough, do enough, change enough, give enough, even repent enough to remove the guilty mark of our sin. There is not enough religion, there is nothing we could sacrifice to purge away the stains of our crimes against God.
That’s why Jesus came. In Christ, God Himself provided the one and only element capable of washing away our sins, the blood of Jesus.
Have you been to Jesus for the cleansing flood?
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?
There’s a fountain flowing for the soul unclean.
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?
