Acts 5:11 (KJV)
And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things.
Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, had presumed upon the Holy Ghost and upon the local church. They believed they could take liberties within the church. They did not expect God to care if they “tweaked” what was right in order to get gain. They were slain for it and great fear came upon all the church because of it.
I believe we lack this fear in most churches today. Leaders within those churches presume upon the Holy Ghost and expect, so long as gain is made through it, they can tweak things in the church to their preferences.
I understand that certain things in the church must not be held too rigidly. My objection is not with a modicum of change. My objection, or rather, caution, has more to do with the attitude of leadership when implementing changes.
We, who are members of a local New Testament Baptist Church, are a part of something awesome, holy, and fearful. We ought to sense the blessing of being a part of a church. We ought also to tread fearfully within it.
