Jeremiah 38:20 (KJV) Choices

Jeremiah 38:20 (KJV)

But Jeremiah said, They shall not deliver thee. Obey, I beseech thee, the voice of the LORD, which I speak unto thee: so it shall be well unto thee, and thy soul shall live.

If only the king had been able to see what we see.

Zedekiah was presented with a powerful opportunity to change the course, not only of his country but of his family.
He was aware
Having knowledge that there was a man of God in Jerusalem.
He was compassionate
And saved Jeremiah from the miry dungeon.
He was sensitive
And called to hear the message of God from Jeremiah. But
He was afraid
Of what the Jews would do to him if he were to obey God’s Word.

Though he did not yet know it, he was afraid of the wrong thing. He chose not to obey God’s Word and attempted to flee the city. He was found out, pursued and captured. But that wasn’t the end of it. The king of Babylon slew all of his sons before his eyes and then put out his eyes. The last thing he saw on this earth was the execution of his children. He would live out the remainder of his days with that awful scene fixed in his mind and the full knowledge that he had been given the opportunity to prevent it. If only he had listened to the man of God.

I think I see this scene played out time and time again with people who hear the Word of God, receive a warning from the man of God, but are motivated for their own reasons to disobey. And they watch as their choices lead to their own children being sacrificed to this world.
