John 8:5 (KJV)
Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?
But what sayest thou?
The scribes and Pharisees were attempting to set up a false dichotomy.
Jesus is the Word. He had previously insisted that He is greater than the Temple and the Lord of the Sabbath. Now they wanted to separate what Moses commanded in the law from what Jesus Himself would say.
It didn’t work.
Jesus allowed the Word of God to do what it was always meant to do; address the matter of the heart. The Bible is meant to be used as a mirror to allow us to see ourselves for what we are and to address our own sin. It was never meant to be used as a club to beat others into the shape we want them to take.
- Religion uses the Bible against others
- Faith uses the Bible to correct self
Religion hypocritically makes people do what the teachers themselves do not. Faith changes the individual who is then moved to be a help to his fellow man.
