Lamentations 1:1 (KJV)
How doth the city sit solitary, that was full of people! how is she become as a widow! she that was great among the nations, and princess among the provinces, how is she become tributary!
What a question. How does a place like Jerusalem go from such glory to such desolation? It doesn’t happen by accident. Israel, though blessed of the Lord, demonstrated a long history of backsliding, unconcern, irreverence, and utter rebellion.
God’s grace had been great, and God’s mercy had been long. Every opportunity had been afforded them to repent and return unto the Lord. Generation after generation had their prophets and their shining examples. Generation after generation chose rather to rebel. Gradually, almost imperceptibly, they declined spiritually, morally, and socially until God removed his blessing; they never even knew how.
Oh, don’t let this be your state. Wherever you are, turn to God, trust Jesus Christ, and obey His Word.
