Daniel 1:5 (KJV)

And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king’s meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.

We understand that the three years of nourishment is an all-inclusive thing. The king had selected young men who already, “… in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king’s palace,…”

They had proven themselves to this point. These three years would be their “college education” so to speak. For three years they would be:

• Well fed
• Well kept and
• Well instructed

It is interesting to me that the Biblical model for advanced "Bible" education seems to be three years. 

• It is Daniel and his friends
• It is Jesus and the Apostles
• It is Paul alone in the desert with the Lord

At one time the average Baptist preacher had a three-year education. My understanding is that it was modeled after the Biblical pattern. It seems to me that advancing beyond that is more of a worldly model. It is given to producing arrogance and elitist thinking. Whenever we Baptists do it, I think it is an effort to “keep up with the Jones’s” of high society and of very little real value to the cause of Christ.
