Daniel received visions, prophecy, which for the believer today would translate into reading the prophetical passages of the Bible and hearing messages on prophetic passages. Daniel said his visions troubled him. He didn’t understand them. There were elements of the visions that were beyond his immediate comprehension. So, the Bible says he “came near to one of them” … and asked.
I wish we practiced this more.
- When we read in our Bibles and don’t understand, ask.
- When a message is preached but we don’t understand it, ask
- When an action is taken and we don’t understand why, ask
Ask the Lord first. In very many cases those things that trouble us can be resolved simply by spending sufficient time alone with God. Sometimes all we do when we pray is ask God for permission to react the way we want to. Sometimes our time of prayer is only so we can justify our own actions by saying we prayed about it. I mean pray until God answers.
Ask your pastor, or whoever was the teacher whose message you did not understand. He will likely have a number of people to speak to. Don’t expect you can take all his time. But feel free to ask.
Ask instead of joining in. When people are troubled about a thing and begin to react negatively, don’t join in. Be quick to assume the best and be willing to accept the answer. Just as God won’t always give you the answer you wanted and just as some passages of the Bible won’t become immediately clear, you may not receive an answer why a thing was done and you might not agree with the answer you receive. But you can still, if your heart is right, accept that the action was well-intentioned.
Ask.
