Therefore, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, I will prepare thee unto blood, and blood shall pursue thee: sith thou hast not hated blood, even blood shall pursue thee.
Mt. Seir, the place and the people this verse addresses, is the area of Edom. King Herod, who was on the throne when Jesus was born and who ordered the death of the children in Bethlehem, was an Edomite. The meaning of the verse is simple; “Since you did not hesitate to shed blood, bloodshed will chase you, hound you, dog you to the ground.”
I think a companion verse, and an explanatory one, would be, Romans 12:19 (KJV)
Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.
- An eye for an eye
- A tooth for a tooth
- Blood for blood
The one who lives by the sword shall die by the sword.
On the other hand,
- Mercy begets mercy
- Charity begets charity and
- Love begets love
The one you choose to live by is the one you may expect to die by.
