I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
I see three elements at work in this verse:
God through Jesus Christ
It is He that the Apostle thanks. All benefit in the Christian life rests upon Him. The Apostle was happy to give Him praise and thanksgiving.
The mind
The inner man. Once saved, this inner man, the mind, can be renewed and conformed through the Word of God to serve the law of God which is His will.
The flesh
This is the part of us that has not yet been “converted.” This is no excuse to let it have a free course. Even the lost world understands that the flesh, human nature, must be contained through laws and discipline. Those who are saved are more capable of personal discipline than the lost and are therefore more responsible to do it.
