But of these who seemed to be somewhat, (whatsoever they were, it maketh no matter to me: God accepteth no man’s person:) for they who seemed to be somewhat in conference added nothing to me:
I can’t imagine that an appropriate application of this passage would be to lack respect. Neither can I accept that we should reject spiritual teachers.
- This passage has to do with Paul’s apostleship
- The passage is about to those who questioned it
- The passage also points to those[1] who had made themselves to be more than they ought
But it is a right balance for the believer to learn to make so much more of Jesus that, in comparison, we make nearly nothing of even the most respected of men.
We certainly have trouble with that. Men who have gained respect precisely because they make much of Jesus, become themselves, often through no fault of their own, a distraction for others away from the Lord.
Because of the context, I think preachers ought to pay the most earnest heed to the concept. No preacher ought to be known for following a man. He ought to be so “Christocentric” that it’s all anyone can see in him.
[1] In Paul’s case, they were Judaizers.
