O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?
That the original audience of this epistle were Christians, there is no doubt, yet the Apostle charges them with foolishness. The term is a harsh one, especially in light of our Lord’s words,
Matthew 5:22 (KJV
But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
The term is not an exaggeration. The most foolish thing any Christian can do is to allow some spiritual teacher to lead them back into a works-based religion. It smacks of Israel in the wilderness longing for the leeks and onions of Egypt. In a moment of difficulty, they could not remember the slavery, the beatings, the murder of their children. All they could remember is that they were fed. Facing a perceived threat, they forgot the dangers of slavery, replacing those memories with a false sense of safety.
So it is with the Christian who turns to look at the works of the flesh.
- He forgets the sense of failure.
- He forgets the hopelessness.
- He forgets the traps of religion.
He longs for them instead of the liberty that is in the Spirit of the Lord.
That is foolish, indeed.
