And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife’s sake.
Abraham made a wrong decision based on a false perception. He looked around Gerar and determined that the “fear of God is not in this place.” Based upon that flawed perception, he and Sarah chose to deceive the king and tell him Sarah was his sister.
Even a casual reading of the passage informs us that Abimelech and the people of his kingdom fell quickly under the fear of God.
It turned out that Abraham’s eyes were on the wrong subject. He needn’t worry himself with the hearts of the people. What he needed to know was that God was in the place. God put the fear of God into the people in short order.
Our job isn’t so much to determine who does or doesn’t fear God. All we need to concern ourselves with is being obedient to the Lord. He is at work in those that appear to fear Him and, maybe, especially in those who seem not to fear Him.
