Hebrews 5:7 (KJV) His Prayer Was Heard

Hebrews 5:7 (KJV)

Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;

The scene is Gethsemane. A little behind Jesus is Peter, James, and John. They had been commissioned to pray for Jesus. They were instead asleep. Farther away were the rest of the eleven. We know not what they were doing.

Jesus was alone in prayer, sweating as it were great drops of blood.

Luke 22:42 (KJV)
Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.

Much ado is made of His prayer. Was He actually asking God to spare Him from death? His sacrifice on the cross was our only hope to be saved. Did Jesus really ask God to remove Him from such important work?

The answer lies in our text. His prayer was heard. His prayer was answered, and He did go to the Cross. Jesus was not praying to be saved from the cross. He was praying He would make it to the Cross.

  • The forces opposed to Him
  • The good intentions of His friends
  • The tension of the hour

any of those things had the potential of ending His life previous to the Cross.

His prayer was heard. He was saved from death before His time. No sword, no spear, no violent outburst, no bloody reaction to His friend’s cutting off the ear of a servant cost Him His life.

Obediently, willingly and at the right moment He finished His Work and gave up the ghost.
