To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men.
There is a quality that ought to mark the Christian. I don’t think it is a natural one. It’s not the product of conversion but of preaching and teaching. Though I am sure it is aided by the Holy Spirit, it is really something we accept and learn through discipline. It is gentleness.
We ought to learn not to speak evil
And that is of any man, even those we believe to be evil.
We ought to learn not to be brawlers
That is quick-tempered and anxious to fight.
We ought to learn to be meek
That is quiet and submissive. I do not believe this to mean that we allow others to walk over us. It means that we have our life force under reign. We control it for its proper use.
And we learn these things by remembering that it was the kindness and love of God that changed us from the very men we might wish to speak evil of, to fight, and to dominate.
