Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.
We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
There are three statements of position in the early verses of this chapter:
Ye are of God
Vs 4
They are of the world
Vs 5
We are of God
Vs 6
All three of these statements are true. But the foundational one is verse six. If it is not accepted that the author of these words is of God, speaking under the inspiration of God, then the reader will dismiss everything else posited in the book.
Here is one of the great divides that occur among people, and the one that must be reckoned with before any sort of understanding among believers and unbelievers can be had. We as believers take it that the Bible is of God. It is not an opinion. It is not just another view. It is the truth upon which all that is true rests.
To argue from the position that the Bible is true, with a person who does not see it as such is a futile exercise. We must first ask God to help them come to this conviction or else all the rest will be doubtful disputation.
