And the children of Israel set forward, and pitched in the plains of Moab on this side Jordan by Jericho.
The chapters previous to this describe a very rapid, may I say even aggressive, movement on the part of Israel toward their goal. It comes to a crescendo here with them finally pitching their tents across Jordan from Jericho, their point of entry to God’s Promised Land.
These chapters also describe what I think is the strongest hostility Israel had encountered to date:
- Edom then
- Arad then
- Sihon then
- Og and then
- Balak hired Balaam to curse Israel
In the midst of these battles there was also:
- Moses’ sin at the water of American
- The death of Miriam and Aaron and
- The murmuring which led to the fiery serpents
And there will be yet more trouble before Joshua led them into their Promised Land.
It reminds me of Revelation where, when Satan realizes he has little time left and doubles down on his assault against the people of God.
Be assured, when you start to make spiritual progress, you will in turn face your fiercest battles.
Be assured as well that God is greater than all of our enemies in this world.
