Joshua 11:23 (KJV) Only Then

Joshua 11:23 (KJV)

So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD said unto Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land rested from war.

There is only one way to have true rest from a war; you must take the whole land. You must defeat the enemy. You must stop at nothing less than unconditional surrender.

So long as there is one soldier on the other side, still committed to his cause, still angry for his displacement, still bearing a weapon, there is no rest. The war remains. There may be formal papers signed. It may be the antagonists offer no significant resistance. But if they still bear animosity, if they still have a weapon with which to fight, there can be no rest.

Now this Old Testament lesson, as hard as it is to swallow, is prepared for us to teach a much more valuable truth. In the realm of the spirit, we must mortify the deeds of the flesh. Anything less will leave us vulnerable, conflicted, and miserable as believers. We must take the whole of the Word of God. We must believe it, receive it, and obey it. We must not rest until we have separated from the world and are sanctified in Christ.

Only then will we have rest.
