Now Joshua was old and stricken in years; and the LORD said unto him, Thou art old and stricken in years, and there remaineth yet very much land to be possessed.
This is the land that yet remaineth: all the borders of the Philistines, and all Geshuri,
We have, in the previous chapter, a list of accomplishments of Joshua and Israel in the Promised Land. There is, in the final segment of this chapter, a list of the land on the other side of Jordan Moses gave the two and a half tribes.
It is good to reflect on what has been accomplished.
It can be helpful, indeed, wise, to know from whence you’ve come and to identify what is in your possession.
But the account does not end there
We have at the beginning of this chapter, a reminder that there is more to do.
As valuable as having a list of projects complete, forward progress can then only be made by taking inventory of the “to do” list. What remains? What has not been done?
It’s never as much fun to look ahead to battles yet to be fought, land yet to conquer, nations yet to subdue; blood, sweat, and tears yet to be shed. But someone must take inventory and pronounce the hard news. There is still very much work to be done.
It was the LORD who said it here.
It ought to be the LORD’S man who will say it today.
