Then Saul said unto his servants that stood about him, Hear now, ye Benjamites; will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards, and make you all captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds;
That all of you have conspired against me, and there is none that sheweth me that my son hath made a league with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you that is sorry for me, or sheweth unto me that my son hath stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?
One of the sorriest states a man can find himself is when he sees even his family and friends as having turned against him. Sorrier still is when he begins to view them as enemies.
David had done nothing but good for Saul. Saul’s feelings of failure were of his own making and, I am sure, were his own to correct. It wasn’t good music or good news that would make the difference in his relationship with God. It certainly wasn’t the likes of Doeg or the assassination of the priests, or the capture and death of David. His only real cure would have been pure repentance.
It’s a pretty fair sign that a man is on the wrong path when he thinks everyone, even his own family, have conspired against him. More likely they have conspired in an attempt to help him, if he would but receive the help.
