And the men of David said unto him, Behold the day of which the LORD said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thine hand, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul’s robe privily.
Jamieson-Fausset-Brown writes, “God had never made any promise of delivering Saul into David’s hand; but, from the general and repeated promises of the kingdom to him, they concluded that the king’s death was to be effected by taking advantage of some such opportunity as the present.”
There was no such promise recorded, at least in the Word of God. It is rather an assumption based upon those things they knew God had promised and then added upon by their own devices. It isn’t that far off what Sarah did when, believing it to be the will of God for Abraham to have a son, and not believing it to be possible that she could give him that son, created her own scheme to force the will of God to be done.
How often we are guilty of this very sin. We know what God’s Word says yet we cannot see how to reconcile what God promises with what we experience in life. It’s our reconciliation that creates all the trouble. It’s our passion to bring to a conclusion what God has promised through our own efforts.
David, unlike Abraham, resisted the temptation to “put feet to God’s promise.” He waited on God. As a result, we have the example of what God will do if and when we stay out of His way.
