Let not my lord, I pray thee, regard this man of Belial, even Nabal: for as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and folly is with him: but I thine handmaid saw not the young men of my lord, whom thou didst send.
The biblical account of Abigail seemingly flies in the face of much modern Christian teaching concerning the role of the Christian wife. There are a lot of comments about how Sarah called Abraham lord. Not so many about how Abigail called Nabal a man of Belial.
The Bible says of her that she was both of good understanding and beautiful countenance. Abigail’s actions, rather than being a dishonor to her husband, were meant to save him, his property, and his reputation when David was anointed King. He claimed to have no indication that David would one day rule. Abigail believed God’s plan for David.
A wife’s true role is to be her husband’s helpmeet. I believe Abigail attempted to be exactly that. Nabal did not repent, so God took him in death. Abigail lived on in victory.
