1 Samuel 8:9 (KJV) Samuel Was Displeased

1 Samuel 8:9 (KJV)

Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.

There are some powerful lessons for the preacher in this text. The Bible says that when the people asked for a king like everyone else had:

Samuel was displeased
Vs 6
And he was right to be. No good thing will ever come from the people of God wanting to be like the people surrounding them.

Samuel prayed
Vs 6
And he was right to do it. The fact is that the preacher is merely a servant of the Lord. Our displeasure, right or wrong, is not the issue; God’s direction is.

Samuel was to hearken to their voice
Vs 7

This was not because they were right. They were not. It is a sad day when God turns us over to our own lusts. It’ll get us in more trouble than we can imagine. Notice that Samuel, though displeased with their choice, was to himself anoint the king they had chosen for themselves.

Samuel was to protest
Vs 9
He was to let them have their way, but he was to warn them once again of the mistake they were making.

Sometimes I think my main function as a pastor is to keep on protesting unto this world the consequences of their wrong choices. Nevertheless, God allows them to continue. Our place is not to force our convictions upon them, but only to tell them God’s Word on these issues.
