That the LORD may continue his word which he spake concerning me, saying, If thy children take heed to their way, to walk before me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall not fail thee (said he) a man on the throne of Israel.
God made an unconditional promise to David. But His promise to Solomon was conditional. It had an “if” attached to it.
As a father of adult sons and having now reached an age where the gray hairs are prevailing, I envision King David here praying that his son and his son’s sons, keep their conditions. We know it does not happen. We know that God fulfills His promise to David “legally” through Solomon and “naturally” through Nathan.
Every godly father wishes his children grow in the faith and pass the very same faith down to their children, yet the Bible teaches us that, in the last days, there will be little faith left. One of Satan’s most effective tactics in accomplishing this is the lie that our father’s faith remains intact, even when we have adjusted it to fit in our own culture. It is a declination that leads to heartbreaking abandonment of the faith once delivered.
It is true that our own father’s faith is not exactly like that of 100 or 200 years ago, let alone 2000. The current generation is not the first to accept decline. But it is also true that to decline further is no help to the trouble.
As my hairs grow gray, and as I approach what are surely my final decades[1] on the earth, my heart’s desire and prayer is that my children, and my children’s children, stubbornly cling to the faith, and the practice of it, that they have witnessed in me.
