And, behold, all the men of Israel came to the king, and said unto the king, Why have our brethren the men of Judah stolen thee away, and have brought the king, and his household, and all David’s men with him, over Jordan?
We really have no need to be ignorant of the Devil’s devices.[1] He does the same things again and again.
No sooner had David gotten the very painful victory over Absalom than did another division begin among the people. Once a weakness has been exposed, Satan works double time to exploit it.
First, Joab, who had disobeyed David’s orders and killed Absalom, threatened a rebellion if David did not stop mourning Absalom’s death.
Then, the ten tribes of Israel (they had not yet become their own kingdom but did already view themselves as separate) got jealous that they had not been asked to bring David and his household back home.
Third, “there happened to be a man of Belial“[2] willing to capitalize on the tension and attempt another uprising against David.
David stopped the division by:
- Getting out among the people
- Offering pardon to those who had taken the other side
- Being generous to those who had been his support and
- Acting quickly against the man of Belial

Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

And there happened to be there a man of Belial, whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjamite: and he blew a trumpet, and said, We have no part in David, neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to his tents, O Israel.
