Then there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David enquired of the LORD. And the LORD answered, It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he slew the Gibeonites.
I learned to call it “skeletons in the closet.” Whenever we take on a new role, especially when we take over for someone else, there are unknown, hidden issues. The one who formerly held the position, or else those who sought to give you the position, very likely gave you all the good points but left out some of the worst points about the position.
- It might just be how hard the job is
- It might have to do with mistakes that were previously made
The position may be an appealing one, but there are almost certainly “skeletons in the closet.”
David knew a great deal about Saul, he was anointed by God to replace Saul, but it would fall upon him to make reparations for many of the mistakes of Saul.
The one taking over the position ought to be aware that he becomes responsible for the skeletons in the closet. This is not meant to imply that he should not accept the position. I am not even sure I think it would be healthy to know what the skeletons are before accepting the position. All that really matters is whether God wants you in the position. But we ought to be aware ahead that things are not as rosy as they are made to appear and that we will live with the consequences of those skeletons as long as we have that position.
And we ought to be willing to accept them, address them, move past them when we can and carry on despite them when we cannot.
