Luke 16:15 (KJV) Justifying Self

Luke 16:15 (KJV)

And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.

Of the Pharisees Jesus said these three things:

  • They justify themselves before men
  • They are highly esteemed among men
  • God knows their hearts and it is an abomination in the sight of God

He spoke directly to these Pharisees but is there not a warning for us?

We must be careful not to justify ourselves

I believe we do this too often when we create a culture that in the sight of others appears to be righteous but hides to truth that resides in our hearts.

We must be careful not to seek the esteem of men
The heart is so desperately wicked that this is a bigger issue than we generally wish to admit. We like our heroes, and it is even better if we are one in someone’s eyes.

We must take care that we have not deceived ourselves into accepting the esteem of men
Because this will certainly come at the price of being an abomination in the sight of God.
