And David went out to meet them, and answered and said unto them, If ye be come peaceably unto me to help me, mine heart shall be knit unto you: but if ye be come to betray me to mine enemies, seeing there is no wrong in mine hands, the God of our fathers look thereon, and rebuke it.
When these men approached, David did the manly thing and came out to meet them. At the time, he had no idea what their intentions were. Would they be friend or foe?
If a friend, he was more than willing to receive them
Though he had been hunted and chased – most likely by these very soldiers, he was quick to forgive and become friends with them. He held no grudges (though we know that David kept a record of men like Joab, who would eventually be dealt with.
If an enemy, David appealed to the Lord to help him
He knew he could not match them in combat. But he didn’t have to.
He was a servant of God. He was confident that God would deal with them in a way that would bring honor to the Lord.
We are no match for those who are opposed to the Lord and His work. We do not have to be. The God of our fathers will look thereon and rebuke their deeds as He sees fit. Forgive those who ask it of you. Receive those who want to be your friends. And trust the Lord with everyone else.
