And they put his armour in the house of their gods, and fastened his head in the temple of Dagon.
I think my interest in Saul’s armor springs from two thoughts
First, I remember the David rejected this armor
“I cannot go with these, for I have not proved them.”[1]
Saul offered David the tools he should have taken to fight Goliath himself. David refused them and handily defeated the giant, not with the tools of the king, but with the help of the Lord.
Secondly, I remember that the Philistines had put the ark of God in their temple of Dagon
But in that case, they quickly realized it could not remain there. There was power in the ark of God. There was no such power in Saul’s armor or in his very head.
Men, by their own will, had set up Saul to be king. He had devised his armor for his own protection. Neither was effective.
David became king by the hand of God. He defeated the enemies of Israel by the same hand.
We need not the will of the people for leaders or the devices of men for our aide. What we need in this hour is the blessing and the hand of God.
O, Lord, may that hand be forthcoming soon!
[1] 1 Samuel 17:39 (KJV)
And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.
