John 14:28 (KJV) Why Wouldn’t They Rejoice?

John 14:28 (KJV)

Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.

Why wouldn’t they rejoice?

Because they loved themselves
Jesus had been with them for three and a half years. They had forsaken everything to follow Him. His leaving them behind left in them a hole. They wished for things to remain the same, to remain constant.

Because they misunderstood His purpose

They looked for Him to conquer Rome and take the throne in Jerusalem. Three and a half years in, and they still had not figured out this was not the time for that. They had heard Him say He had come to seek and to save the lost. They were ok with that. They just expected it all to end with a kingdom.

Christianity is primarily about the plan and will of God. When we learn to love the Lord, we will learn to rejoice when that plan is accomplished.
