2 Chronicles 17:3-4 (KJV)
And the LORD was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the first ways of his father David, and sought not unto Baalim;
But sought to the LORD God of his father, and walked in his commandments, and not after the doings of Israel.
The Bible says GOD blessed Jehoshaphat because, among other things, he “walked not after the doings of Israel.”
That doesn’t mean he never made poor choices. Neither does it mean he didn’t pay for it whenever he did.
- It was, I believe, a poor choice to join affinity with Ahab.[1]
- It was a poor choice to visit with him
- It was a poor choice to go into battle with him
I cannot reconcile why he would have ever listened to Ahab after hearing from the prophet or why he would have agreed to go to battle dressed as the king while Ahab disguised himself. I can only say that bad friends can sometimes have a powerfully negative influence upon us.
God protected him, but there is no encouragement there. The matter was too close for comfort. The LORD may have just as quickly taken him out of this world.
We ought to attempt to reach the lost. But our affinity must be with the righteous.
[1] 2 Chronicles 18:1 (KJV)
Now Jehoshaphat had riches and honour in abundance, and joined affinity with Ahab.
