But if ye enquire any thing concerning other matters, it shall be determined in a lawful assembly.
The Roman system was ruthless in a lot of ways but also insistent upon law. Our own government is modeled much after that of old Rome.
Mind you, neither theirs nor ours is perfect. I think the U.S. government may be as ruthless as Rome ever was.
I am interested in the consistency I see. In Acts 18:13 (KJV)
Saying, This fellow persuadeth men to worship God contrary to the law.
The Jew attempted to conflate their law with that of Rome. Gallio would have none of it.
Acts 18:15 (KJV)
But if it be a question of words and names, and of your law, look ye to it; for I will be no judge of such matters.
He claimed jurisdiction over civil and criminal matters. Religious issues were not his concern.
In Acts 19, we are in a different place with another official. The complainants, in this case, were Greeks. In this case, the town clerk, we don’t have his name, withstood his own countrymen because they had created an unlawful assembly.
Roman officials were not perfect, but they understood jurisdiction and the difference between a peaceful protest and an unruly mob.
Our country would be on a good path if we simply re-established these.
